Background
The first Used Book Superstore opened in Burlington MA in August of 2008 and was followed quickly with openings in Danvers and Saugus MA and then Salem and Nashua NH. The closing of Borders has expanded the shopper base for both used and new books. In response the Company has broadened its offerings to include new bestselling books, new toys and games and high demand premium used books.
According to Bob Ticehurst, founder and president of the Used Book Superstore chain, “Borders closing has resulted in unfortunate press for the book business. Book buyers still enjoy browsing through shelves to find a new favorite author, and, still only 12% (Pew Internet www.pewinternet.org) of adults have eBook readers. This gives discounters like Used Book Superstore an advantage and opens up new opportunities for growth for us.”
“Because our business model appeals to the price sensitivity of today’s consumer, we have expanded our core products from used books and DVDs, to include best selling new books, premium used books, DVDs and toys and games. Our stores appeal to readers of all ages and offer books at prices dramatically less than other book retailers.”
The Used Book Superstore chain is continuing its three-year expansive growth to become one of largest used bookstores in the USA with more than 100,000 gently used books, CDs, DVDS and audio books, as well as new books, toys, games and puzzles in each store. There are currently five Used Book Superstores in MA and NH. The Company opportunistically is considering further expansion in New England as well as into major retail centers across the USA.
Unlike many used bookstores, Used Book Superstores inventory includes premium used books of popular bestsellers like: “Water for Elephants”, the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, and the Stieg Larsson series including: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest”.
